Four to five years ago, anybody who could buy - did. Job security was not an issue. Even if you lost your job, you were pretty well certain you could sell your property quickly - usually at a profit. Back then, the desire to own a home outweighed most financial concerns.
Today is a different story. Home values have declined and the length of time it takes to sell a home is much longer. However, homeownership is much more affordable now than 5 years ago. With interest rates well below 5% and much lower home prices, why are people hesitant to buy?
In a recent survey conducted by Trulia.com 27% of renters said they do not plan to ever buy a home. Of the remaining 73%, two-thirds said they plan to buy, but not now. So what's holding them back?
Here's what I've learned. Research conducted by The Majestic Group found there are seven and one-half reasons causing people not to buy right now. Job security is number one. This is a valid concern. Unlike 5 years ago, if you lose your job today and need to sell your home, you may very well have a problem.
The other six reasons, in large part, are related to tougher lending guidelines, more conservative views toward credit and the abundance of misinformation being dispensed by so called media and internet "financial experts".
